Before there were automobiles, the most dangerous thing that could happen to to a person walking was maybe getting bit by a snake. But automobiles flying down the streets at up to 60 MPH have changed all that. Even in 25 MPH School Zones, careless drivers routinely drive 35 MPH and even 45 MPH, endangering the lives of childen.
Yes, automobiles have made being a pedestrian on foot so dangerous. And getting hit by an automobile means the body's soft tissue and narrow bones are no match for the 2000 to 4000 pounds of steel that makes up a hulky automobile. The fact is, today with automobiles everywhere, avoiding being hit by one as a pedestrian on foot has become a game of cat and mouse.
Maybe that's why the future world is so full of mechanized walking vehicles, called mechs or mecha in sci-fi movies, video games and comics. You almost never see anyone walking on foot.
